1. Speak with her parents before the proposal

This might seem very traditional and old-fashioned, but this gesture speaks volumes. This is important, especially if your partner has a very close relationship with her parents. While some people balk at the idea of speaking to parents before proposing, this communicates that you respect the people who raised your partner and would like them to be involved and not kept in the dark about your plans to propose. They can also offer input on how you should go about the wedding proposal, what type of ring she prefers, where she would like the proposal to happen.

2. Buy the ring

You should have a pretty good idea of your partner’s style preferences. If you’ve talked about proposals and weddings, you may even know exactly what kind of ring she would love. If not, family members and friends can give you some valuable advice as to what pieces to consider. They can also sneakily find out what her exact ring size is so you know what to get. Also, research on reliable and trusted jewelers. If you are unable to narrow down her ring size, ask your jeweler if the ring you are eyeing can be easily resized.

4. Choose a proposal type and location

It’s time to get the ball rolling and plan the actual proposal. First, you should consider your partner’s preference. Would she prefer a private intimate proposal with just the two of you or a more public proposal with her closest friends and family? By narrowing down what she likes and what she’s comfortable with, you can easily plan the perfect surprise wedding proposal. Once you’ve decided if you want to do a grand proposal or a private one, you can select a location. We suggest choosing a place that is meaningful for both of you. If you plan to do it during a vacation somewhere you’ve never been to, you can select a spot where you know both of you will be able to remember fondly.

Proposals in beach locations are very popular in Hawaii, for good reason. We have some of the most beautiful, unspoiled beaches in the world. Take advantage of that! Oahu also has plenty of gorgeous mountain trails, such as Makapu’u Point perfect for couples who are avid hikers. Waikiki Beach has romantic restaurants with gorgeous ocean views as well. There are plenty of options in Hawaii, whether you want to be in a quiet, remote area or a bustling metropolis.

4. Write down what you plan to say

You don’t need to have a grand speech written down, so don’t feel pressured with this. But think carefully about what you want to say, and jot it down. It can be what you love most about your partner, or why you've decided you want to spend the rest of your life with them. It can be short and sweet, just something to help you lead up to popping the actual question.

5. Make it a celebration

It doesn’t have to be a party, but do have a plan for both of you to celebrate the moment. If you think your partner prefers a private one-on-one celebration, you can prepare a bottle of champagne and a romantic dinner or picnic on the beach. If you know there are people she would absolutely want to witness the special moment, you can have them waiting for your signal nearby and out of sight.

6. Ask trusted friends for help

It’s common for friends to talk about their dream proposal or dream wedding. This is the perfect opportunity to ask your SO’s best friends or even sister for help in making sure your surprise proposal isn’t uncovered before you even pop the question. Her friends can help keep her distracted during the day of and help you set up a fake and realistic backstory so the surprise isn’t blown.

7. Hire a photographer

Plenty of wedding photographers are also willing to shoot surprise wedding proposals. Have a photographer ready. If all goes to plan and your partner has absolutely no idea, you will want to have someone document both your heartfelt reactions. It’s something both of you will want to look back to, so why not make sure it’s documented?

8. Pop the question!

It’s D-Day! Make sure your ring is in a safe and secure place (preferably a zippered pocket so it doesn’t fall out), your game plan is all set, and your speech is ready. It’s okay to be nervous, but be excited too! Make sure to let both of you savor the moment, and don’t get discouraged if she gets so emotional that she doesn’t answer immediately.
